Rock on with Roku
Gin is the drink on everyone’s lips – and with summer just around the corner, we’ll be seeing a lot more of it in refreshing cocktails and punches to beat the heat in style. Enter Roku Gin – Suntory’s latest creation to kick dry gins’ butts to Timbuktu.
he foundation of Roku is built on the eight classic gin botanicals – juniper berry, coriander, angelica seed and root, cinnamon, cardamom, bitter orange and lemon peel. However, this Japanese blend brings in six unique local botanicals, creating the most well-balanced gin to ever touch my tongue.
The sakura flower, sakura leaf, gyokuro tea, sencha tea, sansho pepper and yuzu make for an all-at-once sweet, floral, citric and spicy savour with a smooth and silky texture. The layering of flavours are complex yet taste harmoniously meant-to-be, like a lovey-dovey grey-haired duo. Once united, they’re inseparable.
Vacuum distillation is used to extract the fragrance of the cherry blossom blooms and retain the sweet and sour flavour of yuzu. In classic Japanese fashion, the process is authentic and made as an ode to their traditional culture. Despite being created by a distilling giant that is Suntory, Roku is still considered to be a craft gin due to their unrelenting devotion to the harvesting and extraction process.
You don’t need much to make a stunning Japanese G&T – just some long finely sliced ginger and good quality soda or tonic in a 2:1 ratio with the gin. Nothing else is necessary.
