Editor’s Letter – Winter 2020
Enough has been written about the Coronavirus toilet paper buying frenzy to create a lifetime of bathroom reading, but a lot of experts, not so much in the field of loo paper but in human psychology, I have put it down to the need to hold onto some sense of normality when much of it is crumbling away. This is probably linked to the run on drive-thrus post- lockdown (actually, there are probably a couple of links between the two that I don’t need to go into).
It really does show though, how much the little things add to that buffer between the primal and the civilised. While I am not so sure that we are going to see a flick of the switch reset in terms of how we work and live, I know that there are still ongoing economic and health issues rolling out that will shape the next couple of years, if not longer. I do hope though that, if anything, there have been some lessons about humility, values and our relationship with each other and the planet – and maybe also to not take ourselves so seriously and remembering to enjoy the little things along the way.
