Art of Antipodeans

As a country, our stunning landscapes and natural beauty is a trait we are known the world over for, as tourists come from far and wide to capture our wild and rugged little nation at the bottom of the world. And while the influx of tourists may be on pause for the time being, Kiwis are beginning to turn to their own “backyard” for their travel fix, resulting in some beautiful imagery of our breathtaking land, taken from a local perspective.

Celebrating the works of talented photographers across NZ and Australia, the Sony Alpha Awards challenges professionals and enthusiasts of all levels to showcase their handiwork using Sony Alpha camera and lenses. This year, the judges received over 3,000 images submitted by Kiwis and Aussies, with many catalysed by the recent lockdown restrictions in New Zealand.

This year’s Grand Prize went to New Zealander, Oscar Heatherington, whose photo, “Backwash”, was taken while swimming with friends off the coast of the Otago Peninsula after coming out of lockdown. It seems the success of Kiwis ran throughout the competition with nearly half of all category winners hailing from our country, including the winner of the Youth category, Alex Marshall, with his photo “A Celebration of Solitude”, taken at the Nelson Lakes National Park.
