Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama: Art and Style in Infinity
Yayoi Kusama is the polka dot Queen of Contemporary Art. In a world where women are silenced in almost every space, Kusama’s art screams. It’s avante garde; it’s interactive and full of life. Even in gallery spaces, it spills out at the edges. It’s too big for any room you put it in. And it’s certainly too big for any product that might try and act as its canvas. But that hasn’t stopped Louis Vuitton from trying. They “collaborated” back in 2012, and they’re trying again now. I use scare quotes because one does not simply “collaborate” with Kusama. Collaboration makes it sound like a fair and equitable working relationship. In fact, as their brand new collection shows, Louis Vuitton was in fact mugged. Each piece, whether it be a bucket hat, bag or scarf, is now indelibly Kusama as her art brings it to life like a mad scientist. Instead of using lightning as her chosen power source for bringing these pieces to life, she uses bold colours and playful illustration. These don’t belong to Louis Vuitton anymore. These are Kusama’s. I’m sorry, these are just the facts.
Suffice to say, we love every single piece, and Louis Vuitton has masterfully brought Kusama’s hand crafted aesthetic across the entire collection as the pair explore the concept of infinity. Spanning both men’s and women’s collections, this new collection of ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, accessories, luggage and trunks, and fragrances is available now.
