A Gloomy Summer
The beach may seem like an obvious source of inspiration for a Spring Summer collection. Sun, sand and bare skin are the very things our minds jump to when the warmer months begin to peak through the grey clouds of winter. But when you consider the collection is from British brand Burberry and the beaches of inspiration may not be the typical tropical sandy paradise we usually lust over, the inspiration becomes somewhat confusing.
However, as Burberry’s Chief Creative Officer Riccardo Tisci describes it, British beaches are a place for all to come together and enjoy the simple pleasures in life.
“The collection is inspired by the beach as a place where humanity meets, a point where different worlds collide. That tension between dressing and undressing, between revelation and protection, underwear and outerwear, all feels relevant to now and part of Burberry’s modern DNA”, says Tisci of the brand’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection.
This season, we explored a new sensuality – a consciousness of the body. I was inspired by the liberation and openness of youth, of people embracing their bodies and revealing them – a pride in themselves, who they are, their identities.
The collection, which debuted at London Fashion Week in September, sees the lines of swimwear heavily influencing silhouettes throughout, while “sunburned” denim and deconstructed trench coats also reflect this alternative beachwear theme.
A nod to the anti-tropical British summer is also present with Gothic figures dressed in full black outfits sent down the runway, representing reinterpreted fantasies of Britishness.
Embracing the quintessential British attitude, Burberry’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection brings the seaside to London and shows us how beautiful their beaches can be.
