Dior’s Desire: The Past Revisited
For a brand with a heritage like that of Dior, it’s little wonder that their collections often look to bring the past with them into the future. Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Ready-To-Wear Fall Winter 22-23 collection was inspired by the works of artist Mariella Bettineschi, who examined portraits of women from the 16th to 19th centuries and cut and stacked their eyes to question how judgement has conditioned women from the past, through to today.
The references to the past are clear in the clothing, however Dior looked to future technology when it came to the garment construction. The inside of their Bar Jacket uses innovative techniques developed in the D-Air Lab** Laboratories to create a system that regulates the body’s humidity, warming up if necessary, while a bodysuit in the collection also maintains a constant temperature using this technology.
Dior’s desire to bring heritage aesthetics & future technologies together in this collection is indicative of fashion’s continuous fluidity; a sign of the times, both past and present.
