Hair Trend – Speaking Volumes

Just in time for our seasonal inspo search, the four global fashion weeks served an array of looks that focused on wearability. With the intention to champion uniqueness; natural, loose and carefree styling was popularized. In this issue, we discover how to recreate the styles that rode the running theme of sophisticated ease. Reflective of the city woman who embodies intentionality, intelligence and grace, these barely-done dos will make your crew question where you picked up the newly refined savoir faire in your stride.

Tousled Twist

For a style that’s so universally flattering, versatile and incredibly quick to take you from electric-shocked to chic, the half-up half-down do is way too underdiscussed.

For Cinq á Sept’s Parisian-inspired NYFW FW18 show, Kien Hoang complimented the romantic aesthetic with a voluminous, texture-rich style that oozes demure femininity. Loose locks with a glamorous twist, its effortless appearance resonates with the industry’s current obsession with the sexy, model-off-duty look. For those who prefer the rebellious edge, Olivier Theyskens brings dreadlocks to the forefront that beautifully illustrates the dichotomy between tough and delicate.

Get the look:

1. Prime the hair with a weightless, conditioning heat protectant.

2. Apply a high-gloss moisturizing cream from the mid-lengths to ends to reduce frizz.

3. Add body and fullness by applying volumizing mousse to the roots.

4. Use a curling iron to bend large sections of hair in alternate directions to create loose locks and smoothen the ends.

5. Create a matte finish with a powder spray.

6. Twist 2-inch sections of hair on either side of the crown making sure to curl in an outwards direction and pin the hair just above the ears.

7. Finish off with an anti-humidity spray to seal you style.

EXPERT TIP:

To recreate the bougie dreadlock, use a salt spray to add grit and backcomb; adding small pieces as you go. Finish off with a matte spray at the ends.

City swept

Disheveled, hastey and imperfectly perfect was the beauty aesthetic that predominantly ruled the runway.

Portraying a strong lean towards empowering individuality by the likes of Missoni, Tommy Hilfiger, Maison Margiela and Alice McCall; the models’ features were embraced and enhanced in a way that emulated the sense of letting their hair down. Rather than a generic look in uniformity, Missoni’s MFW AW18 was “more celebratory of what the models naturally have,” stylist Anthony Turner said. “The final look felt like the models have been partying – it was more rock ‘n’ roll than perfectly polished.” Featuring a relaxed structure, the key to this understated chic presentation is the richness in volume and texture.

Get the look:

1. Use a body-building spray at the roots and a volumizing product to lift the hair up and provide hold.

2. Scrunch the hair whilst drying to add texture.

3. If you have long hair, roll your hair into two soft buns on either side of the head and gently dry the hair for a couple of minutes with a diffuser. Let it cool before unravelling.

4. Follow with a tong to add more bends in alternating directions.

5. Smooth out the ends with a straightener.

Expert Tip:

For a fun, youthful edge, nod to Tommy Hilfiger’s MFW SS18 show – add some micro braids through the hair and gently clamp it with a straightener.

Keep it on the Down Low

Continuing the prominent low-pony trend from fashion week last year, the pulled- and pared-back hairstyle returned once again with some updated details.

Evoking the carefree, creative and fast-paced life of a typical New York woman, the low ponytails were adorned with a deep-set parting, pressed-on face-framing flyaways and a spruce of texture. Eugene Souleiman transformed the notorious lazy-day style into a chic representation for Dion Lee’s A/W18 collection. “At first glance this hair is simple, but in reality it’s very nuanced. The deep side-part lends sharpness, the wisps a soft rawness,” Souleiman describes.

Get the look:

1. Use a conditioning spray on the roots and a light mist of texturising hairspray to give it grip.

2. Blow dry the hair into a sleek and smooth finish around the roots and brush the hair back from the hairline.

3. Spray a flexible volumizing spray to the mid-lengths to add texture and blowdry with the diffuser to your hairdryer to tame frizz.

4. Loosely curl the hair in alternate directions to lend some movement near the ends.

5. Add a spritz of dry spray to mattify the ends. Tuck the hair into a low-slung pony at the nape of the neck.

Expert Tip:

Alternatively, take a page out of Brandon Maxwell’s F/W18 book and use a moisturizing cream for a sleek finish.
