Roseanne Way – General Manager, Operations at Kindercare Learning Centres
How do you define effective leadership, and how has your definition evolved over time?
Effective leadership, to me, means empowering others to achieve their full potential while working towards a common goal. Over time, I’ve come to realise that leadership is not just about achieving results but also about creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and inspired to grow.
What strategies do you use to build and inspire a high-performing team?
I focus on building strong relationships, fostering open communication, and providing opportunities for growth and development. I lead from a “high trust model”, that is outcomes focussed, but allows individuals to achieve in a way that best suits their unique leadership style.
I have found that there are some key principles that contribute to building a high performing team. Focus on outcomes, not processes; empower decision making; trust in capabilities; foster open communication; emphasise learning and growth; lead by example (including not being afraid to show vulnerabilities); recognise and reward outcomes.
Can you share an example of a leadership challenge you faced and how you overcame it?
I’ve had to face and overcome many challenges over the years, at times whilst also navigating through personal challenges. A key strategy that helps every time is compartmentalisation.
One challenge I faced was leading my team through a significant organisational change. To navigate through this, I prioritised transparent communication, actively listened to concerns, and empowered team members to take ownership of the change process. This approach helped build trust and fostered a sense of collaboration and resilience.
Compartmentalisation as a psychological strategy, has been my most useful tool as a leader when navigating a significant challenge. It’s something I’ve encouraged and coached my team to apply also, as I find it keeps me emotionally regulated; enables me to keep a level head, even in high-pressure situations; enables me to focus and prioritisate on the task at hand without being overwhelmed by other demands or stressors; it also helps with boundary setting, risk management, mental clarity, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
What role do mentorship and networking play in your approach to leadership?
Mentorship and networking have been invaluable in my leadership journey. I seek guidance from experienced mentors, and I also prioritise building relationships with peers and industry leaders. These connections provide valuable insights, support, and opportunities for growth and collaboration.
How do you balance maintaining authority while fostering collaboration and inclusivity?
I believe that authority and collaboration are not mutually exclusive. By leading with empathy, transparency, and humility, I create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas and perspectives. This approach helps build trust and fosters a sense of shared ownership and responsibility.
What is the most challenging obstacle you’ve faced in your career, and how did you navigate it?
One of the most significant challenges I faced was navigating a major organisational restructuring. To navigate it, I focused on staying adaptable, communicating openly with my team, and prioritising self-care. I also sought guidance from mentors and peers, which helped me gain valuable insights and perspectives.
How do you maintain resilience and focus during periods of uncertainty or failure?
I prioritise self-care, including regular exercise, mindfulness, and spending time with loved ones. I also focus on reframing challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Additionally, I surround myself with a supportive network of peers, mentors, and friends who offer guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback.
What are your go-to strategies for managing stress and avoiding burnout?
My go-to strategies include prioritising self-care, setting realistic goals and boundaries, and taking regular breaks to recharge. I love to get up early and start each day out in nature with the dogs. I also make time for activities that bring me joy and help me maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Can you share a time when you turned a significant setback into an opportunity for growth?
One example that comes to mind is when I faced a major project setback. Instead of getting discouraged, I used it as an opportunity to reassess our approach, gather feedback from stakeholders, and implement changes that ultimately led to a more successful outcome.
How has your perspective on resilience changed as your career has progressed?
As I’ve navigated various challenges throughout my career, I’ve come to realise that resilience is not just about bouncing back from adversity but also about growing and learning from experiences. I’ve learned to approach challenges with a growth mindset, focusing on what I can control and influence, not what I can’t, asking myself, what can I learn and how I can improve, rather than getting bogged down by obstacles.
What habits or routines have been instrumental in your personal and professional growth?
I prioritise habits such as regular exercise, mindfulness, and journaling, which help me maintain a clear mind, stay focused, and reflect on my experiences. I also make time for reading, learning from others, and seeking feedback to continually improve.
How do you stay motivated and continually strive for improvement in your career?
I set clear goals and priorities, celebrate my achievements, and seek feedback from others to identify areas for growth. I also surround myself with a supportive network of peers, mentors, and friends who inspire and motivate me to strive for excellence. At various times I have also sought executive coaching which has been invaluable.
What advice would you give your younger self when you were just starting out?
I would advise my younger self to be more patient, take more risks, and focus on building strong relationships. I would also remind myself that failure is an opportunity for growth and learning, and that it’s essential to stay true to my values and passions.
What role does feedback play in your journey of self-improvement, and how do you approach it?
Feedback plays a crucial role in my journey of self-improvement. I try to approach feedback with an open mind, a willingness to listen, and a commitment to acting on constructive criticism. I seek feedback from trusted sources, including mentors, peers, and direct reports. I use it as an opportunity to learn, grow.
