Success In Focus
Coming in at number 18 on Forbes annual list of most powerful women, GlaxoSmithKline’s CEO, Emma Walmsley, is the first and only women in the world to head up a major pharmaceutical company.
Walmsley started her career at cosmetic giant, L’Oreal, where she worked for 17 years in a variety of management and marketing roles in London, New York and Paris, before spending her final three years at the company in Shanghai, as General Manager of Consumer Products for L’Oreal China.
Moving to GSK in May 2010, she was appointed the company’s President of Consumer Healthcare Europe, before quickly being promoted to head its global consumer healthcare division in 2011. In 2015, Walmsley became CEO of Consumer Healthcare, where she lead GSK’s sales drive into emerging markets.
In 2017, Walmsley took over as the GSK’s CEO and since being in the top position, has initiated a global restructuring programme, with an aim to save the company $500mil a year by 2021. She has stated that the savings made from this restructuring will be invested into R&D.
She is noted for being a leader with a focus on developing talent, however, one that doesn’t tolerate underperformers. She is speculated to be the highest paid female CEO of a FTSE 100 company, after receiving a £1m pay rise earlier this year, making her total remuneration package total nearly £6m.
