The Events You Need To Be At This May
Wig Wednesday
Wig Wednesday will be running for the fourth year this June, encouraging New Zealanders to support the Child Cancer Foundation. The charity receives no direct funding from the government, so relies on public support to continue helping Kiwi kids with cancer and their families. Participants are asked wear a wig to work or school and show their support by donating. Last year, Wig Wednesday raised over $100,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation so let’s hope that can beat that this year. Register over at wigwednesday.org.nz or call 0800 424 453

Documentary Edge International Film Festival
It seems May and June is the season for festivals, with the Doc Edge festival also running throughout the two months. Now in its 14th year, the prestigious festival showcases documentaries, both local and international, that will both entertain you and challenge your thinking. Highlights include Honeyland, which follows a female beekeeper in the Balkans as she struggles to save her hive, and Buddy (pictured), a film following six guide dogs and their owners.

Auckland Wine Week
While Central Otago, Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough are NZ’s most celebrated wine regions, Auckland’s wine industry is one that is often forgotten about. However, with the likes of Waiheke Island, West Auckland and Matakana all producing beautiful wines, it feels like a little more recognition is deserved. Well, fret not Auckland wine lovers, the local wine scene is getting its own celebration with the first Auckland Wine Week taking place this June. With events taking place across all three sub-regions, including wine tastings, food and an opportunity to discover some smaller local wineries, there’s something for both newbies and connoisseurs alike. Kicking off celebrations with Winetopia at Queen’s Wharf Events Centre, this festival is sure to shine a light on Auckland’s flourishing wine scene.
