Things To Watch And Do This Spring
M2woman breaks down what you should watch and so this spring.
The Power of the Dog
Directed by iconic Kiwi filmmaker, Jane Campion, and host to a star-studded cast list, The Power of Dog is a haunting drama, based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Savage. Benedict Cumberbatch plays a cruel and charismatic rancher who taunts his brother’s new wife (Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst respectively) and her son after they move onto their property; a torment that only seems to stop once he finds himself exposed to the unexpected. Filmed in the South Island, it received endless praise after its showing at the Venice International Film Festival and looks to be a shoo-in during awards season.
In cinemas 11 November.
The French Dispatch
Described by the director as a “love letter to journalists”, this collection of three storylines, centering on the journalists of an American newspaper based in post-War France, promises both joy and a few laughs. Directed by multi-award winning Wes Anderson (Grand Budapest Hotel) and starring Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Tilda Swinton, among a long list of other acclaimed actors, viewers can expect Anderson’s usual quirk, charm and trademark visual pleasure.
In cinemas 9 December.
Last Night in Soho
Kiwi rising star, Thomasin McKenzie, takes the lead role in this psychological horror film (alongside our cover star, Anya Taylor-Joy) as Eloise, a young woman in present-day London who is mysteriously transported into the body of a young nightclub singer, Sandie, in the Swinging Sixties. However, all is not as it first appears, as Sandie’s glamorous life takes a dark turn, spilling out in Eloise’s present day.
In cinemas 11 November.
